EBID Welcomes AfDB as First Institutional Shareholder in Historic Move

The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) announced the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has become its first institutional shareholder, following approval by the AfDB's Board of Directors on June 17, 2026, in Abidjan. This move marks the AfDB as the first international development finance institution to join EBID’s shareholder base. This significant development shows a key moment for regional financial cooperation and investment within West Africa. Dr. George Agyekum Donkor, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EBID, stated, "The entry of the African Development Bank Group into EBID’s shareholding constitutes a historic and transformative milestone for our institution. This strategic partnership reflects strong confidence in our vision and development model." He added that the partnership strengthens EBID's capacity to mobilize resources and expand its impact in West Africa, accelerating efforts to address critical financing needs in energy, infrastructure, and private sector development. This collaboration is set to enhance EBID's ability to drive sustainable economic growth and integration across the region.

Financial Commitments and Impact

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has committed a USD 30 million equity investment in the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID). This substantial investment solidifies the AfDB's role as a key partner in EBID's future endeavors. This equity commitment is further complemented by a USD 70 million long-term line of credit, designed to provide key funding for strategic projects. The credit line is specifically intended to finance high-impact projects, particularly those focused on the renewable energy sector across West Africa, thereby promoting sustainable development and energy access.

The USD 70 million credit line is expected to catalyse up to USD 230 million in total project financing, demonstrating the leverage and potential impact of this financial injection. This initiative anticipates significantly improving electricity access for more than 250,000 households throughout the region, contributing to enhanced living standards and economic opportunities. Additionally, the credit line is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 355,500 tonnes annually across West Africa, aligning with global efforts towards climate change mitigation and environmental sustainability. These financial commitments are poised to deliver tangible benefits, fostering both economic growth and environmental protection.

Strategic Alignment and Transformation

The transaction aligns smoothly with the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development’s (EBID) Growth, Resilience, and Opportunity (GRO) Strategy for the period of 2026–2030. This strategic alignment shows the institution's commitment to its long-term development objectives and its vision for a prosperous West Africa. Previously, EBID's ownership structure consisted exclusively of its Member States, making the African Development Bank Group the first institutional shareholder from outside this traditional framework. The inclusion of the African Development Bank Group introduces a new dimension to EBID’s governance and operational capacity, diversifying its shareholder base beyond the founding member countries. This shift is expected to significantly enhance EBID’s financial standing, strengthen its institutional credibility, and bolster its ability to pursue its mandate of fostering economic development and integration within the West African region. The partnership marks a new era of expanded financial reach and strategic collaboration for EBID.

Leadership Perspective

The African Development Bank Group's (AfDB) entry as the first institutional shareholder in the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) represents a significant shift in EBID's operational framework. This strategic partnership enhances EBID's capacity to mobilize vital resources for regional development projects, which are key for addressing the diverse needs of West African nations. The collaboration is expected to strengthen financial support for key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and private sector development across West Africa, driving economic progress and job creation. The move also diversifies EBID's ownership structure, which previously consisted solely of its Member States, signaling a new phase for the institution's financial stability and operational reach. This development aligns perfectly with EBID’s Growth, Resilience, and Opportunity (GRO) Strategy for 2026–2030, reinforcing its long-term objectives for economic integration and sustainable development within the region. The partnership is expected to foster greater regional cooperation and accelerate the implementation of high-impact projects.
