The event, which aims to promote digital intellectual property growth, was held on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, at the New Brookfields Hotel in New England, Freetown. Sierra Leone is pledging to advance its digital capabilities in intellectual property following this engagement, signaling a strategic move towards a more digitally integrated future for its intellectual property landscape. The workshop serves to inform stakeholders on the use of ARIPO's online services, providing essential knowledge and practical guidance on leveraging these digital platforms for more efficient intellectual property management. This initiative shows Sierra Leone's dedication to modernizing its approach to intellectual property in line with regional and international best practices.

Boosting Innovation and Digital Services

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) has reported a significant shift towards digital submissions, noting a growing trend in intellectual property administration across its member states. Mr. Grey Njowola, Head of Information and Communication Technology at ARIPO, provided compelling statistics, stating, "80 percent of all new applications received by the organization in 2025 were submitted online." This statistic shows the increasing reliance on digital platforms for intellectual property processes and reflects the effectiveness of ARIPO's efforts to promote online services. The substantial uptake of digital submissions demonstrates a clear preference among users for accessible and streamlined online channels, which significantly enhance the efficiency and reach of intellectual property services.

In line with this trend, Sierra Leone has taken proactive steps to modernize its national intellectual property framework and align it with contemporary digital standards. The country recently enacted the Trade Marks Registration Act, 2024, which updates its legal provisions concerning trademarks, ensuring they are strong and relevant for the current economic climate. This legislative action represents a key step in strengthening the country's IP infrastructure. Additionally, Sierra Leone's Cabinet approved the ratification of the Protocol on Intellectual Property, signaling a profound commitment to aligning with regional and international IP standards and fostering a conducive environment for innovation. These actions are part of a broader effort to enhance the nation's capacity for innovation and digital services within the intellectual property domain, positioning Sierra Leone as a forward-thinking participant in the global knowledge economy.

ARIPO's Golden Jubilee and Online Push

The workshop in Freetown convened on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, coinciding with a significant milestone for the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO). The organization is observing its 50th anniversary this year, marking five decades since its establishment and celebrating a rich history of promoting intellectual property rights across Africa. This jubilee year has seen ARIPO place a strong emphasis on the expansion of its digital services and the smooth integration of online platforms for intellectual property management across its member states. The ongoing push for digital transformation reflects ARIPO's strategic direction as it commemorates its half-century of operation, aiming to ensure its services remain relevant, accessible, and efficient in an increasingly digital world. This focus on digitalization is critical for enhancing the overall effectiveness of intellectual property systems and supporting economic growth and innovation throughout the region.

Commitment to Collaboration and Future

The workshop was organized jointly by the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, the Office of the Administrator and Registrar General, and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), demonstrating a concerted effort among key stakeholders. During the event, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay Esq. Emphasized the country's strategic direction, articulating a vision for Sierra Leone's role in the global innovation landscape. The Attorney General's remarks noted a key shift in focus towards fostering local innovation and technological development, recognizing the immense potential within the nation. The workshop concluded with participants reaffirming their collective commitment to enhanced collaboration in advancing digital intellectual property services.
